Grammar and Writing Level 2
Course Description:
In this course, students expand their knowledge of basic grammatical structures, improving their ability use them more quickly and more accurately in both oral and written form. The writing portion of the course guides students to write a well-organized passage of 7-15 sentences on a single topic.
Course Objectives:
After completing this course, the student will be able to:
the following verb tenses:
- present simple and progressive
- past simple and progressive
- simple future: “be going to” and “will”
- the affirmative, negative, and question forms of all the tenses
◊ nouns and adjectives in the following two patterns: “noun+be+adjective” and “adjective +noun”
◊ count and non-count nouns and articles
◊ quantifiers: some, any, a little, a few, much, many
◊ subject and object pronouns
◊ possessive adjectives
◊ compose at least four of the following types of paragraphs correctly using the correct verb tenses and sentence structures:
- a description of a person (e.g., self, classmate, relative, friend, etc.)
- a description of a place
- a description of a routine
- a narration of a past event
- a description of a holiday custom
- an opinion supported with examples (e.g., ideal spouse, friend, job, place to live)
- an exposition about future goals or some aspect of life in the future
◊ identify and diagram nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, objects of verbs, and objects of prepositions in a sentence.
◊ with guidance, revise sentence structure errors (e.g., fragments and run-ons) as well as verb tense errors and issues with mechanics.
◊ evaluate their writing progress through at least two journals or informal letters addressed to the instructor.

In this course, you will be evaluated in the following way:
Grammar 35%
Writing 35%
Final Grammar Test 10%
Final Writing Test 10%
Homework and Active Participation 10%
Total 100%
NOTE: The Grammar Final will be on Wednesday of Week 10
Grading Scale (passing) (non-passing)
A+= 98 -100%
A = 93 - 97% C- = 70 – 72%
A- = 90 - 92% D+= 68 – 69%
B+= 88 - 89% D = 63 - 67%
B = 83 - 87% D- = 60 – 62 %
B- = 80 - 82% F = 59% and below
C+= 78 - 79%
C = 73 - 77%
NOTE: You must pass BOTH the grammar and writing with a 73% or above in order to pass this class.
